As we age our blood vessels become more and more narrow especially in those who have diabetes. I have a patient who had abnormal testing in his heart, abnormal capillary function that was indicated by endothelial testing done here in our office. Endothelial Testing
The endothelium is a thin membrane that lines the inside of the heart and blood vessels. Endothelial cells release substances that control vascular relaxation and contraction as well as enzymes that control blood clotting, immune function and platelet adhesion.
When there is dysfunction of the endothelium, arteries are not able to fully dilate. These endothelial abnormalities can eventually develop into artherosclerosis, where there is unusual thickening and hardening of the arterial walls which can cause a stroke or heart attack. Through Endothelial testing, discovering endothelium impairment can be significant in predicting the potential of a patient having a stroke or heart attack.
Mentioned study was conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Martin, Dr. RW Braith, and JM Aranda, Jr. at the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology and the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville, published 2011 issue of the Journal of Applied Physiology.
